March 17th Lenten Reflection

John 12:20-33

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Holding on as tight as I can

A reflection by The Rev. Brian K. Gross

Perhaps you are like me and find that there are things in your life that you hold on to very tightly. Not necessarily because they are good things or important things but because they are familiar things. I wonder if we hold on so tightly to things that we do not feel capable of grasping on to smoothing new. Jesus comes to bring us newness of life and tells us that in reaching for that newness we must let go of other things. Are you willing to let go of what may be comfortable but not be life giving? For our own reflection today, I share with you this poem by Erin Hanson.

I was the type of person,

That held onto things too tight,

Unable to release my grip,

When it no longer felt right,

And although it gave me blisters,

And my fingers would all ache,

I always thought that holding on,

Was worth the pain it takes,

I used to think in losing things,

I’d lose part of me too,

That slowly I’d become someone,

My heart no longer knew,

Then one day something happened,

I dropped what I had once held dear,

But my soul became much lighter,

Instead of filled with fear,

And it taught my heart that some things,

Aren’t meant to last for long,

They arrive to teach you lessons,

And then continue on,

You don’t have to cling to people,

Who no longer make you smile,

Or do something you’ve come to hate,

If it isn’t worth your while,

That sometimes the thing you’re fighting for,

Isn’t worth the cost,

And not everything you ever lose,

Is bound to be a loss.
